There are many different types of pests that can invade your home, anything from rodents to ants, and they all need to be taken care of as soon as you find them. One particular pest that can be particularly bad for a home is termites. The reason that termites can be so bad for a home is they actually attack anything that is wood, and they break it down. Termites have an enzyme in their body that allows them to digest wood. If you find that you have a termite problem, act quickly as it can structurally compromise your home. Here are a few tips when dealing with termites:

Professional

One of the first things that you should do is make sure that you call a professional. Termites are not a pest to be taken lightly because they truly can cause a lot of structural damage to a home. They get into the frame of the home and start to digest the wood. When you call a professional they will be able to come in and spray, this way they are able to kill the termites. They focus on protecting the home for the immediate future, but you can hire them to spray a few times a year.

Seal

Something that every homeowner should do is seal their foundation. Termites will mostly travel underground, and that means that they are going to enter a hole through the foundation. It is important that your foundation is in good shape. You will want to dig a trench around your entire home and seal the outside of the foundation. First, you will want to get the big cracks with grout, but then finish sealing the foundation by putting a waterproof and bug-proof finish on your foundation.

Get Rid Of Wood

The main ingredient in termite problems is the amount of wood around the home. Many people do not realize that wood mulch is like a magnet for termites. It is also very smart to cut back any shrubs that could be coming into contact with your home. Having plants is important, but try sticking with the ones that are not going to attract termites. Any bushes or shrubs that have wood should be cut back well away from the home. If you get rid of the wood that is coming into contact with your home you are going to significantly reduce the chances of getting a termite problem.
